Productivity training helping FightMND to cure, to care, to make aware

Looking for an engaging and practical L&D experience to develop the team

In 2014, FightMND was established with the purpose of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Since then, a small but mission-driven team have raised more than $48 million to execute their mission.

FightMND Campaign Manager, Bec Daniher was looking for an L&D opportunity for the team that would deliver big returns and have practical outcomes. With 87c in every dollar raised being committed to research projects and care initiatives, any investment in staff is a big deal so the training needed to deliver serious bang for their buck. Bec said,

“We’re laser focussed on our mission and that means we want as much of the donated money to go to raising awareness, finding treatments and eventually a cure. But we also need to develop our team. Building 20 designed a program that would deliver on the development-side while being really conscious of our budget.”

The 2-workshop program helped the team understand the fundamentals and make productivity a priority

“We didn’t want people feeling that we were monitoring their performance, we wanted them to learn how to get the most out of their time at work. And we wanted the learning outcomes to stick. Building 20 was great to collaborate with, they designed a program that was targeted and engaging” said Bec.

We designed a 2-workshop program with Bec, with a focus on both short and long-term outcomes. With this in mind, we designed a program with four aims:

  1. Understanding the fundamentals. We made sure the team understood the evidence-based fundamentals of how to work productively from home and in the office.

  2. Making meetings better. We worked with the team to draft and implement a set of meeting principles to ensure meetings were efficiently achieving their purpose.

  3. Embedding productivity in FightMND’s ways of working. By the end of the program, participants had designed and implemented several hacks and distraction solutions. They finished the program understanding how to monitor their own productivity and how to implement solutions where necessary.

  4. An awesome L&D experience for the team. 73% of the participants strongly agreed “I’d recommend the program to others” the rest agreed.

Practical outcomes and engaging workshops

FightMND’s Campaign Manager, Emily Paul, commented on the program:

“Building 20's productivity training was extremely beneficial for our team, I would highly recommend it. We were guided through a series of productivity hacks and undertook practical activities that were directly applicable to our day-to-day work. We also had the opportunity to analyse our individual distraction data against our team and sector average and the results were really surprising. Luke was an excellent facilitator and we now have a number of tactics to use straight away to eliminate distractions and boost our productivity and motivation.”

A 1:10 cost-benefit ratio in the first year

The program led to significant benefits including team members saving 43 minutes a day by changing their approach to work and meetings, along with avoiding distractions. That’s 22 days a year per person who went through the program. That’s equivalent to a 1:10 cost benefit ratio for the program in the first year alone.

“This was such an invaluable training program to complete - I would highly recommend it to any business or team. Our team learnt a number of productivity tactics that have boosted motivation and efficiencies. Luke was amazing to work with and he tailored the sessions to each individual based on their data,” said Bec on the completion of the program.
